Copenhagen, Denmark — A shooting on Saturday in a Copenhagen neighborhood known for its countercultural atmosphere and thriving hashish trade left a 30-year-old man dead and four others injured, Danish police said.
Two masked gunmen opened fire inside a building in the Christiania neighborhood, Copenhagen police spokesman Poul Kjeldsen told Danish media.
Kjeldsen said the shooting was believed to be linked to criminal gangs, Denmark’s TV2 reported.
He said that one of the injured was in critical but stable condition; the others suffered minor injuries.
Police were still searching for the gunmen as of Saturday night.
Christiania has been a free anarchist commune since the 1970s, when hippies began to occupy a former naval base. Authorities tolerated the sale of hashish until 2004, when police began cracking down on drug trafficking. Still, the hashish trade has continued with occasional outbreaks of violence linked to criminal gangs.
