Iraqi authorities on Sunday ordered the closure of LED advertising screens in Baghdad after a hacker managed to display a pornographic film on one, security forces said, announcing the arrest of a suspect.

Issued on:

On Saturday night, “a person managed to hack into an advertising screen in Uqba bin Nafia square,” a major intersection in the center of the Iraqi capital, a security source who requested anonymity told AFP.

The hacker “played a pornographic movie for several minutes before we cut the power cord,” he said.

Videos of the pornographic film being played as cars passed by in downtown Baghdad were widely shared on social media.

These “immoral scenes” prompted authorities to “turn off all advertising screens in Baghdad” while they review security measures, the security official explained.

The Interior Ministry also announced in a statement that a suspect had been arrested, without giving details.

Several screens that usually display advertisements for household items or political candidates ahead of elections were blacked out on Sunday morning, according to an AFP photographer.

Iraq, largely conservative, announced in 2022 that it planned to block pornographic websites, but many remained accessible.

The Iraqi government, dominated by pro-Iranian parties, has attacked several YouTubers and TikTokers since last year, accusing them of sharing “indecent content” that goes “against morality and traditions.”

Some of them have been jailed, including a young woman who posted videos dancing to pop music.
