SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners’ lone two-day tenure atop the AL West ended with a 3-1 loss Tuesday night to the Major League-worst Oakland Athletics. Leagues, who built an early lead on home runs by Seth Brown and Shea Langeliers. .

Star outfielder Julio Rodríguez was injured with a pinched nerve in his left foot that was taking him by the wayside, and starting pitcher George Kirby was ruled out before the game due to illness and replaced by Luke Weaver (2-5). First baseman Ty France left after two innings with a bruised left thumb suffered in a pickoff.

“Things happen,” Seattle coach Scott Servais said. “We played a lot of games. We have been on a good run in which everything has gone as we wanted. So there will be a little bump in the road, a little bit of adversity.”

Seattle had won 12 of their previous 13 games, turning a 7 1/2 game deficit into a one game lead over Texas. The Rangers beat the New York Mets 2-1, tying the Mariners 75-57. Houston trails a percentage point at 76-58.

Josh Rojas singled with one out in the ninth and JP Crawford doubled to put the tying run on second. But Oakland closer Trevor May, who was born in Longview, about a two-hour drive from Seattle, struck out Eugenio Suarez with an outside sweeper.

Seattle had gone 8-0 against the A’s this year.

“We are definitely in the spoiler seat and we want to ruin as many dreams as possible,” May said.

Brown hit a solo home run in the first inning for the first run of the Oakland series and his first home run since July 22. Langeliers added a two-run drive in the second for Oakland (39-94). It was Langeliers’ fifth home run in his last eight games.

“We all know Shea has the ability to take the ball out of the park, and it was a long stretch for him to try to figure that out and make adjustments,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “I think his swing looks great right now.”

Seattle’s Cade Marlowe was walked with the bases loaded in the fourth by Ken Waldichuk, who allowed one hit in four innings.

Sean Newcomb (1-0), the third of six A’s pitchers, struck out four in 1 2/3 innings for his first win with Oakland.

May earned his 15th save in 18 chances, finishing with four hits.

“The bullpen came in and did an amazing job,” Kotsay said. “That’s a game this year that we’ve seen: Our offense scored early and didn’t score, and we couldn’t hold the lead. And tonight was a great sign of the progress we’ve made.”

Weaver allowed seven hits in 3 2/3 innings in his first start for Seattle. The 30-year-old right-hander signed with the Mariners last Tuesday after being released by Cincinnati.

“(Kirby) was sick most of the night and he felt terrible today and when he came in, we felt it was best to move on and not throw him in tonight’s game,” Servais said.

“George loves being out there. He is an incredible competitor, but we have to do the right thing. He was always sick ”.

PACKED HOUSE

The announced attendance of 44,280 was the largest Tuesday crowd at T-Mobile Park since Seattle’s home opener in 2014.

UNTIL NEXT TIME
