Canterbury boss of football Phil Gould believes medical records relating to a player’s mental health may have been leaked.

Gould made the revelation at Wide World of Sports’ Six tackles with Gus podcast after reports of a riot at the Bulldogs surfaced.

A story over the weekend claimed that as many as eight players had raised concerns about the workload under first-year coach Cameron Ciraldo.

A later report alleged that a player left a training session after being punished for being late and then allegedly said goodbye to the club.

Gould confirmed that a player has taken leave for mental health reasons, but the details cannot be made public due to the nature of the situation.

“This is one of those cases where, as a club, we have to be very measured in our response, because there are very sensitive issues at stake here,” Gould said.

“It’s too sensitive to go into detail about what did or didn’t happen, or what effect it had on anyone involved. There’s some exaggeration and some embellishment, but even debating those issues is unnecessary at this point.

“We’re certainly very conscious of the mental health and well-being of the player involved, and there’s a lot of sensitivity around that.

“It’s not like he left after the event, he was still at the club for another week and then he decided he needed to take some time off, and he has been.

“We have been waiting for some reports from the doctors that we now have in our possession.

“My suspicion is that the details of that report have somehow leaked, which is why the media has suddenly gotten hold of the story.

“Our priority is the well-being of the player, it’s that simple.”

Opinion on the game has been divided ever since it was revealed that certain players were unhappy with their workload.

The Bulldogs are on the verge of missing out on the NRL Finals for the seventh year in a row, and Gould has no problem with the methods Ciraldo is employing to drag the team up.

“Cameron Ciraldo has always stood up for his coaching style and the type of coaching we’re doing on the Bulldogs, and we all support him wholeheartedly,” Gould said.

“No one has left, I can assure you. No player has complained to us at the club about anything related to training or culture.

“It’s good to know that now the public understands how hard we worked, because sometimes when you see us play, you wonder if we did it or not.

“It gets hard for some, too hard for others, but the ones that come out the other side are the ones you want to build your club around.”

Ciraldo himself addressed the situation on Wednesday morning before the media.

He did not deny that players worked long hours, or that penalties were sometimes applied for various indiscretions, but he did not apologize.

“It hasn’t been mentioned. It’s rumours, but if there are people who don’t want to work hard and don’t want to check all the boxes to win NRL games, then they don’t have to be here,” Ciraldo. saying.

The Bulldogs end their season against the Gold Coast on Sunday.
