Elon Musk called Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy “a very promising candidate” earlier this month. On Friday, Ramaswamy pitched Musk as a possible White House adviser, of course, should he beat the odds and win the election.
Of course, Ramaswamy, a 38-year-old tech entrepreneur, remains an unlikely contender, but on Wednesday he outshone Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other rivals in the opening debate of the Republican Party’s presidential primary. Missing from the stage was former President Donald Trump, who skipped the debate citing his lead in the polls.
At a town hall in Iowa on Friday, a voter asked Ramaswamy who he would turn to for guidance if he were to become president of the United States. That seems a particularly relevant question for Ramaswamy given his age and the fact that he has never held elected office.
“Now is not the time for on-the-job training,” former Vice President Mike Pence said of Ramaswamy during the debate. “We don’t need to bring in a rookie. We don’t need to bring in people with no experience.”
But in response to Friday’s question, Ramaswamy replied that he wants to bring in people with “a fresh and empty impression.” He later named Tesla CEO and said: “I have enjoyed getting to know Elon Musk better recently, I hope he will be an interesting adviser to me because he fired 75% of Twitter employees. And then the effectiveness really increased.”
In an interview with Fox News earlier this month, Ramaswamy said that what Musk did on Twitter “is a good example of what I want to do with administrative status… Eliminate 75% of the cost of deadlifting, improve the actual experience what it’s supposed to do.”
Musk, after taking over Twitter last October, cut jobs and alienated advertisers while drastically reshaping the service. He changed the name of the service to “X” a month ago.
Ramaswamy also referenced Musk in February, tweeting: “Just as @elonmusk did on Twitter, as president I will release the federal government’s ‘state action files,’ exposing every instance where the feds pressured companies to take action.” constitutionally prohibited actions.
