Why the Blue Jays’ John Schneider wasn’t Alejandro Kirk’s pinch runner

Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider didn’t pinch run for a player known for being one of the slowest runners in baseball on Tuesday, and that ended up costing his team enormously.

With designated hitter Alejandro Kirk on third base and the Blue Jays trailing 5-3 in the eighth inning with one out, pinch hitter Daulton Varsho flew to Washington Nationals center fielder Jacob Young at Rogers Center. Kirk, notoriously slow, scored and was sent off for Young, with the decision upheld after a challenge.

The Blue Jays ended up losing 5-4 when the team scored a run in the ninth after loading the bases with no out.

Later, Schneider said a short bench and the fact that the Blue Jays were down by two were the main reasons he didn’t replace Kirk.

Infielder Mason McCoy, called up from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, was on the bench. He has 23 stolen bases in the minors this year. Kirk has no stolen bases in 303 major league games of his career.

“We were a little short. Brandon (Belt) was unavailable (due to back spasms). We had guys playing everywhere. (Cavan Biggio) short, Davis (Schneider) on third (in the ninth inning), lots of moving parts (with Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman on the disabled list.”

“Tying race, yeah, we would have had a runner there. Less than two, no.

John Schneider said the possibility of the game going into extra innings also crossed his mind.

“You pinch hit Varsho; you’re looking to do damage to try to take the lead and hit a home run. You never know how the game goes. Many different ways to go crazy [expletive] It happens and you get to the 11th inning and that spot comes up. And you want Kirky at the plate.

So yeah, it’s kind of a rule of thumb (don’t reduce two in that situation). The odds on a medium-depth fly ball with an average-shooting outfielder and Kirky on third were probably last on my bingo card.”

However, the Blue Jays made pinch runs for Kirk twice this season with the team trailing by two runs in the eighth inning.

Kirk was at catcher in both games and Danny Jansen filled in for him on defense.
